Insurance doesn’t always play by clean database rules. A single group might have one policy number covering both Dental and Vision. Two unrelated carriers might, by coincidence, assign the exact same number to two different clients. If your commission software insists every policy number be unique, you end up bending your own records to fit the software instead of the other way around.
Commission Tracker doesn’t force that trade-off. Turn on Allow Duplicate Policy Numbers in the Options Menu, and the system will let two policies share a number — as long as at least one other field distinguishes them: Policy Type, Client Name, Revenue Group, Carrier Name, or Carrier Table. The policy number stays true to what the carrier actually issued, and your database stays accurate.
The feature earns its keep during Import Carrier Statement. Once duplicates are allowed, the system needs a way to know which of two identical policy numbers a given payment belongs to — so you configure secondary matching criteria, typically Policy Type, and map that column from your carrier’s file. From then on, a statement row for policy #12345 with type Dental lands on the Dental policy, and a row for #12345 with type Vision lands on the Vision policy, automatically, every import.
It’s a small setting with an outsized effect on data integrity: the alternative is either rejecting valid policies or silently crediting a payment to the wrong record.
